November's Scoop On Cat Litter

November’s Scoop On Cat Litter

We ran an experiment this month on cat litter.

The two contenders:  Arm & Hammer’s Essentials and World’s Best Cat Litter.  We wanted to see just how well Arm & Hammer’s brand matched up to our favorite so far…World’s Best.

Arm & Hammer Essentials

World's Best Cat Litter

Price-wise, they appear to be the same.  And, both of them can be purchased at Raleys, which is awesome for convenience purposes!

Both of these brands are all-natural leaving no litter-dust while scooping and both will happily deny you the pleasure of having to sneeze yourself into a fresh box of Kleenex =/

As far as clumping action, we’re having to award World’s Best Cat Litter on this one.  A&H’s Essentials does well at clumping but just doesn’t make the grade when compared to World’s Best.  We love the way that World’s Best completely clumps everything together in a nice and neat little package while leaving the litter tray clean and dry.

On the task of masking the odor, we have to give this one to A&H’s Essentials.  This brand has a clean, pine-like scent to us, and we like it.  It did help control the awful stench that arises from the ‘box of doom’ much better than World’s Best.  However, if you have a kitten/cat that refuses to cover their ‘remains of the day’, neither helped much for this =/

Bottom line for us was based on performance, and World’s Best won the prize.

Now Taking 2012 Reservations!

We are now accepting 2012 reservations!

Please review the following dates for when we are scheduling to be closed and/or only offering minimal services:

[checklist]

  • Saturday, January 7: CLOSED
  • Friday, February 24: Dog Boarding only
  • Saturday, February 25: Dog Boarding only
  • Saturday, March 24: CLOSED
  • Sunday, April 15: CLOSED
  • Saturday, May 19: CLOSED
  • August 13 – 19: CLOSED
  • Sunday, September 9: CLOSED
  • Thanksgiving: CLOSED
  • Christmas Eve and Christmas Day: CLOSED

[/checklist]

Okay, now for a little clarification as to the changes this coming year.  The reason we chose Saturdays or Sundays to close was two-fold:

[checklist]

  • We decided to close/offer minimal services on the Saturday or Sunday that surrounded a birthday. We’ve always held birthdays in high regard so this coming year, we decided to take a little time off.
  • The reason we chose either a Saturday or Sunday (even if the birthday fell on a weekday) was so that we didn’t interfere with our client’s work schedule (since we service clients by walking dogs and giving them potty-breaks during the week while our clients are at work).

[/checklist]

A big change that you’ll see on the above list is that, for the first time since we opened back in February of 2004, we’ve decided to take one year and not work on  Thanksgiving, Christmas Eve and Christmas Day.  This is a HUGE change for us, and we hope that everyone understands 🙂

Here’s wishing you and yours an early Happy New Year!  We look forward to servicing you this coming year.

HomeoPet Nose Relief for URI Symptoms

We have it on good authority from a dear client of ours that HomeoPet Nose Relief works wonders at alleviating upper respiratory infection symptoms allowing her cat to function much easier.  So, we’re trying it for one of our older cat who recently has developed a cough and is sneezing.

If you’re interested in trying it out for your pets, you can purchase it on Amazon where the product boasts some favorable reviews.  Let us know how it worked for you by leaving a comment below.

Total Discounts This Year So Far

Many discounts for many clients have been had this year so far to the tune of  $2,344.00!  That’s a lot of discounts considering we’re a small, family-run company 😉

We would like to extend our gratitude to each and every one of you for allowing us to care for your fur-kids!   We would also like to invite those of you who have never used our service before to give us a try.  We promise that we will give you–and your fur-kids–nothing but 110%.  And, we’re pretty confident that you will be glad you gave us a call.

What a Chamois Idea!

Do you ever get frustrated at trying to keep the floor dry, in your pet’s area where their food and water dishes are?  It never fails, right?  Just when you wipe the floor clean (or get the carpet cleaned up if you have carpet), the dog comes, takes a drink of water and spills some on the floor.  Is there anything you can use to keep the floor dry?  We believe so.

Go to your local CVS, Target or other such store and purchase a chamois towel.  Put the chamois towel underneath the water dish to collect any water that is spilled right around the bowl.  The chamois towels are super-absorbent towels that love to soak up fluids.

One reason we thought about chamois towels is having to clean-up pee spots all of the time out of carpet.  Animal urine as you well know is carpet’s best friend and makes for lovely odors that are difficult to remove to say the least (note the sarcasm).  So even though the root of the problem needs to be addressed with why the pets are urinating on the floor, to save the floor from getting wet, and ultimately ruined, try using a chamois or chamois type of towel. It may just be the trick that keeps your sanity in-check.

Another type of towel that you might want to try is the Sham-Wow towel.  These towels are supposedly washable, too.  You can purchase them for as low as $7.60 brand new through Amazon sellers and possibly even cheaper than that if you searched around a little.

Homemade Dog Biscuits

Making homemade dog biscuits is a great treat to provide your dog and they don’t take a lot of time to make.  Jessie loves to make dog biscuits experimenting with all sorts of original recipes that she creates herself.  More often than not, the dogs enjoy each and every recipe.  Occasionally, however, she’ll come up with a concoction that just doesn’t cut it so it’s always back to the “drawing board” for her…LOL

If you’re interested in making dog biscuits for your dogs, there are a few things we suggest you do:

[checklist]

  • Know your dog’s allergies, if any
  • Know what foods are not safe for dogs to eat
  • Be mindful of foods that wreak havoc on your dog’s system even if they’re not “allergic” to them

[/checklist]

Some people have asked Jessie how she knows what to put together to make snacks so tasty for dogs. Her thinking is if it doesn’t sound like something she would enjoy, she doesn’t make it for her dogs (her own dogs or her foster fur-kids in her care). For example, she wouldn’t mix molasses with white chocolate but she would mix peanut butter and white chocolate.

Additional notes:

[checklist]

  • Go easy on the grains…you can make dog cookies/biscuits grain-free!
  • If you have cats, explore making cat goodies
  • Lastly, always give your dogs their treats at the right time…after their exercise and when their discipline and boundaries are in-check
  • Have fun!

[/checklist]
