KROMP is our premier off-leash, adventure service where we take a handful of pups on excursions to places outside the area to run, swim, hike and have a blast with their friends.
We had to put KROMP on-hold towards the end of last year due to Larry’s (Jessie’s husband) heart surgery, and subsequent, complications that had arose out of the surgery. Thanks to The Lord, however, he is fairing much better now enabling us to strongly consider the date in which we will post and resume this awesome service that so many of you are waiting for 😀
Participants must meet the following criteria in order to attend:

Lanai is getting a little older (okay, she’s 13 years old now!) and is at the point where she needs a little help with her joint aches and pains. She’s not NEAR as bad as some her age, but she does lay down slowly and her movements are fairly calculated.
Recently, while at Yolo Vet, Dr. Bulkley asked me if I was giving Lanai Actistatin as a joint relief agent. Since I had no idea what Actistatin even was, the answer was abundantly clear to her 😉 She suggested that I try it with Lanai and gave me a FREE 10-day supply to see if it helped her (this was so kind of Laurie to do!). Apparently, many people are raving that their pets are feeling SO much better on this stuff that Laurie (Dr. Bulkley) decided to keep it in stock for them!
The 10-days came and went and I will say:
For Lanai and I, it’s well worth the money!
January 3, 2015: For the past few months, we have been inundated with various cat issues to include an elderly cat urinating on furniture and everything else except in his box (in his defense, he had crystals in his urine and kidney stones) to our younger cat who has always felt the need to urinate either on towels, laundry or in the bathtub. These issues have made for LOTS of laundry, which has been on top of all of the massive amounts of laundry we do daily just cleaning up the dogs after they decided to roll in the mud, fecal matter and whatever else had their interest at the time.
One day during a recent visit to our veterinarian, we were complaining about our elder cat soiling our couch to the point of having to toss it, to everything else he was urinating on and destroying. The verbal list of items that had a match with cat urine and lost was extensive at least to us, and our frustration just discussing this topic was paramount. Upon hearing all of this, much to our surprise, our vet told us of a “cat attractant” litter that was sold on Amazon. This attractant litter was supposed to attract cats to the litter box thereby saving the furniture, laundry and anything else the cats normally went on. Naturally, I was immediately intrigued and thought “Oh boy”! So, searching on the net I went to locate this mysterious litter.
That same day, after a brief search (I searched under “cat attractant litter”) in Amazon, I found Dr. Elsey’s Cat Attract cat litter. It had hundreds of POSITIVE reviews with people raving about how wonderful the litter was and how profoundly it changed their cat’s unwanted behavior.
This litter was not only found on Amazon but at Petco!
Conclusion: I picked up some of this litter at Petco right before we took off for vacation, and within a matter of a few days, the cats were mostly using the boxes that had this litter in them (the other box had what used to be their favorite, World’s Best) according to the pet progress notes we were receiving on them.
When we returned from vacation, within a matter of a few days later, they were for the most part, solely using the boxes that only had this litter in them. AND, when performing a test of laundry laying on the bathroom floor next to the cat box with this litter in it, the laundry remained clean! This litter is something else and I’m SO glad that it has worked.
Announcing a new service as of June 8th: K-ROMP! K-ROMP is now the name of our Truckee off-leash adventures, in the Tahoe area, or should I say, Paw’ventures 😀

Paying tribute and honoring all who have served or are currently serving this great nation: The Land of the Free and The Home of the Brave! Our most sincere gratitude and thanks, we send to you. God bless you!
We are closed from October 3 – 12. We will be answering all messages when we come back on Monday, the 13th.
See you when we get back! 😀
People often wonder how I get the dogs to obey me all the time (frankly, they don’t 100% of the time because that would make them PERFECT, which nothing is and they’re not…LOL)… they want to know what I do, what I say, do I use treats, what my training “philosophy” is, etc. So, I thought I would share my experience in working with dogs and what I’ve learned so far (I’m always learning something from and about them) when it comes to starting out with a new dog.
[pullquote_right]In everything concerning dogs, in general, it starts with trust.[/pullquote_right]
My first point of order when a new dog comes into my care is to establish a bond. This bond will assure the dogs that, when in my care, there is a balance … a hierarchy which promotes security. The bond begins to form the moment we meet for the very first time. It’s during this first, initial introduction that the dog quickly learns I’m the leader of the pack (all humans in the pack or family should be seen as a leader in my opinion) and that they’re safe. They know there is safety because the leaders are calm but in control; this promotes the security dogs look for and need. This security is witnessed through not just the control that is over them within the form of rules and boundaries but the control that is also wielded over all of the animals within the pack (the pack can consist of many different animals, too, including cats for example). These “rules and boundaries” are established right away—enforcing respect–which stimulates trust–that further defines and strengthens the bond.
Dogs size up personalities (humans, other dogs, cats and so forth) – fast. Literally, in a matter of a couple of minutes, a new dog will know:
Have you ever watched dogs and cats meet for the first time? Majority of the time, when a new dog comes into the house, the cats are the first to greet them with nothing short of a smack across the muzzle before it darts off and up its cat tree. Of course, the dog is left absolutely STUNNED for a moment, but more often than not, it never bothers the cats and knows that the cats aren’t afraid of it either. So, what did the cats communicate in a rapid, typical cat fashion? It said, “Guess what…you’re not all THAT; you’re not in charge around here so deal with it!”
If a dog is experiencing a lot of fear, or has intense anxiety, to develop trust, I will keep them tethered to me for a period of time that could range anywhere from 30 minutes to an hour. However long the dog needs to be tethered in order to gain assurance that all is well, this is the amount of time that is given to tethering. The key though when they’re tethered to me and what my objective is, is: Establishing trust through close leadership. This is done through tethering in the form of the following:
By the end of the day, my goal with new dogs is to have established a trusting relationship with them…a first step to a great friendship—a great bond. From here, the rest of our future days together will be built on this trust…the cornerstone in our relationship 🙂 The new commands and skills taught, or refreshed under our command, from this point forward is much more easily achieved.
[pullquote_right] At the end of the day, it’s about communication [/pullquote_right]
Meet Misha, an intelligent girl though smaller in stature had a personality that was larger than life! She was Phoenix, Lanai and Roscoe’s sister, Lanai’s co-puppy trainer, Ross’ herding partner, our warming presence when anyone in the family was sick and so much more.
We met Misha back in the fall of 2005, when she was just five years old. Sassy and spirited, this girl walked into our lives and planted deep roots in our family from that time on.
Misha took great pride in helping me, along with Lanai, raise all of the many pups that came into our care–and I mean MANY! She was a dominant personality who had zero tolerance for unruly behavior, and when a pup needed correction, she felt she always needed to be right there beside me to back me up…LOL.
In conjunction with watching puppies, herding the wayward dogs during the hikes who didn’t come when called (she and Roscoe were great partners in this job duty), she was also the family’s nurse. Hence, one of her nicknames: “Nurse Mish”. Anytime one of us were sick, she was right there to sit or lay with us, along with her brother Ross who would do the same. She especially faithful to lay with Jordie when Jordie wasn’t feeling good–they had a very special bond.
Funny things we’ll miss–and always reflect on–are:
We were extraordinarily blessed to have her with us for as long as we did and truly thank our Lord Jesus for the gift that she was!
Misha, we will always love and miss you more than words can say and hope to be reunited with you some day when The Lord calls us home. Until then, sweet girl, GO PLAY!
